The event: one day for ideas that cross boundaries

Two languages, two ways to follow: VoicePing provided event translation through live Japanese–English subtitles on the venue’s main screen, while Listener Mode let attendees scan a QR code and follow the translation on their phones.

Sony Open Innovation Day 2026 took place on July 29, 2026, at Sony Group Corporation’s headquarters in Shinagawa, Tokyo. Presented through Sony Acceleration Platform, the annual event brought together talks and exhibitions under the theme “Beyond the boundaries.” The exhibition area opened at noon, the main program began at 13:00, and the event concluded at 18:30.

Most stage sessions ran in Japanese. The 15:20 discussion with Johnny Högberg and Jay Dekleva, and the 17:20 talk by Chua Kee Lock, ran in English. Translation therefore had to work in both directions as the program changed language.

Live Japanese–English subtitles on the main screen and attendees’ phones

The same live subtitle feed supported a shared venue view and a personal phone view:

  • On the venue’s main screen: VoicePing’s desktop subtitle view was relayed through the venue AV setup to a dedicated panel beside the speaker and presentation.
  • With Listener Mode on a personal phone: attendees could scan a QR code, open the live translation, and choose the language they wanted to follow.

For an English-language session, the shared screen carried Japanese subtitles; for a Japanese-language session, it carried English. During Olympic speed skater Miho Takagi’s Japanese-language session, for example, live English subtitles appeared in the right-side panel.

Preparing event terminology and subtitle routing

VoicePing reviewed the latest scripts, presentations, and speaker materials, then prepared and checked event-specific English terminology. On July 28, the team joined a full rehearsal with the production team to confirm the display routing and tune subtitle timing in the venue.

That work gave names and specialized terms a defined reference before the live audio arrived.

Beyond the stage: exhibition and conversation

The event had reached capacity before the day. Exhibition booths were open before the stage program, during breaks, and again at the end, giving attendees time to explore projects and continue conversations. VoicePing’s support described here concerns the main-stage program; these exhibition images show the wider event context.
